Superyacht captain’s side hustle brings in $10,300 a month, takes 5 hours a week

Sophie Riegel, a 23-year-old superyacht captain, started a side hustle that now brings in $10,300 a month by selling thrifted clothing online.

She began this venture during her time at Duke University when the COVID-19 pandemic left her bored at home.

Initially, she sold unused items from her childhood bedroom and quickly realized the potential for profit.

Riegel then expanded her efforts by sourcing items from thrift stores around Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

She focuses on buying inexpensive items like T-shirts for $1 and selling them for up to $10.

Over time, she has learned to identify high-value items such as Lululemon leggings and Hoka sneakers, which she can resell at a significant markup.

For instance, she once purchased a vintage Chanel purse for $2 and sold it for $1,000.

Riegel spends about 25 hours a week on her side hustle, managing everything from sourcing items to photographing and listing them online on platforms like eBay, Mercari, and Poshmark.

Her dedication and strategic approach have paid off, allowing her to pocket over $192,000 in total net profit since she started.

This side hustle provides significant income and gives her the flexibility to pursue her primary career as a writer, speaker, and mental health coach without being tied to a 9-to-5 job.
